This paper presents a formal analysis of numerical properties (isopsephy/gematria) observed in biblical texts as represented in standard reference editions using fixed letter-to-number mapping systems (Milesian Greek and Biblical Hebrew). We examine the exact arithmetic properties of Genesis 1:1 (T73 = 2701) in the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) and John 1:1 (plinth total 3627) in the SBL Greek New Testament (SBLGNT), their composite sum (T112 = 6328), and the full character inventory of Colossians 1:17 (6666). We evaluate these textual totals against two competing explanatory models:
artifacts, human literary compositions, or statistical anomalies occurring within expected baseline distributions.
implicitly encode structural invariants that emerge when the text is preserved and evaluated deterministically. To test these models, we establish an empirical control across the 27 opening verses of the New Testament books using the SBLGNT critical edition, comparing base-rate triangular density against single-slot target constraints.
In historical alphabetic numeral systems, each character corresponds to a fixed integer value according to standard Milesian (Greek) and standard Hebrew Gematria tables. Editorial sigla, punctuation, and diacritics are stripped prior to character evaluation, while state-bearing letter forms—including the iota subscript (ι = 10) and movable nu (ν = 50)—are retained.
The seven-word opening of Genesis 1:1 in the Masoretic Text sums to 2701.
+ 1 = 19b. Within a ∈ [1, 9] and b ∈ [0, 9], a = 7, b = 3 (n = 73) is the unique non-trivial two-digit integer solution.
John 1:1 consists of 17 words in the SBLGNT critical edition. Retaining every letter, including the iota subscript (ι = 10) on ἀρχῇ, the total isopsephic value evaluates to 3627.
Figure 1. Geometric coupling of Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1. T73 = 2701 sits on the plinth 3627 and closes T112 = 6328.
The full clause of Colossians 1:17 evaluated under the SBLGNT edition demonstrates exact character-level sensitivity:
To evaluate whether the 3627 total in John 1:1 represents an ordinary outcome of Koine Greek opening clauses, a control dataset was constructed using the opening verse (verse 1:1) of all 27 New Testament books in the SBLGNT edition. Each verse was evaluated using an automated, deterministic letter parser. The parser strips non-alphabetic editorial brackets, punctuation, and accent diacritics, retaining bare character tokens, counting iota subscripts explicitly as ι = 10, and scoring words according to whitespace separation (e.g., yielding 29 words for 2 Corinthians 1:1).

non-John openings equaled 3627, and 0 / 26 completed a triangular figure when added to 2701. Among the specific subset of 17-word opening verses (John 1:1, Acts 1:1, Titus 1:1, Jude 1:1), John 1:1 is the sole hit (1 / 4).
must produce either a statistical baseline from a broader secular Koine Greek corpus demonstrating that 17-word openings hit 3627 at an expected frequency, or a historical model explaining scribal design across centuries and languages.
textual preservation yields verifiable structural properties.
The arithmetic properties of Genesis 1:1 (T73 = 2701), John 1:1 (3627), and Colossians 1:17 (6666) represent deterministic character-level outputs under defined counting rules in standard reference editions (MT and SBLGNT). The empirical control across the 27 New Testament book-opening verses demonstrates that the joint closure T112 = 6328 is unique to John 1:1 among these 27 opening verses, and represents the sole hit among the four 17-word openings in that set. Future Research Directions:
establish broader baseline distributions for 17-word opening clauses.
